NurseScents is devoted to nurses and other healthcare professionals who are using or want to use clinical aromatherapy with their patients. We've found that nurses are searching for credible information, but often don't know how to find it, or how to filter credible information from misleading and potentially unsafe information.
Meet Jan

Janet "Jan" Tomaino holds a clinical Doctor of Nursing Practice Degree (DNP) in Integrative Health and Healing from the University of Minnesota and a Certification for Clinical Aromatherapy Practitioner (CCAP) from R.J. Buckle & Associates. She continued her aromatherapy education with numerous workshops and courses. She is an integrative nurse consultant / educator specializing in clinical aromatherapy.
Jan’s nursing career included pediatrics, hospice, hospital clinical education, and nursing leadership. With her integrative health nursing and clinical aromatherapy background, she developed and implemented aromatherapy, integrative holistic nursing, and energy-based therapy programs in clinical settings.
Jan developed the online course, Aromatherapy: Clinical Use of Essential Oils on the Coursera platform in conjunction with the University of Minnesota. She co-authored the Aromatherapy chapter in Complementary and Alternative Therapies in Nursing (9th ed.). As a speaker, Jan presented at regional, national, and international nursing conferences on the implementation of energy-based therapies and the safe use of essential in clinical settings and has held many aromatherapy workshops for community members. She currently teaches Aromatherapy Fundamentals for the Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality & Healing Academic Health Center, University of Minnesota, and continues to be a resource and educator to nurses implementing aromatherapy in clinical settings. Jan is a long-time member of the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA), a board member of Aromatic Research Quality Appraisal Taskforce (ARQAT) and serves on the Alliance of International Aromatherapist’s (AIA) clinical committee.
